A WOMAN from the area is a contender to become the first female bishop.

The Very Rev Dr Jane Hedges, 58, from Locks Heath, was installed as Dean of Norwich last month.

Now following the Church of England’s historic decision to allow female bishops, she has been tipped as a contender.

Dr Hedges is former Canon Steward of Westminster Abbey and Archdeacon of Westminster.

Dr Hedges received widespread coverage when she became the first clergywoman to shake hands with Pope Benedict XVI.
