GREEN activists have urged the leader of Hampshire County Council not to ban wind farms on council-owned land.

Campaigners, including Hampshire Friends of the Earth, say the council already has powers to decide how it wants to use its land, making the ban unnecessary. They say national planning criteria govern the location and building of wind installations, and the council does not need to impose a blanket ban.

But council leader Ken Thornber says that the benefits of wind farms do not outweigh their adverse impact on the countryside.
