PLANS to install traffic lights on one of the south's busiest roundabouts have been put on hold for at least five years.

Plans were afoot to put traffic lights on the A3 Ham Barn roundabout, north of Petersfield, to cope with the extra traffic expected with the opening of the 371m Hindhead Tunnel, pictured, this summer.

But the Highways Agency has decided to stick with the status quo for now.

Paul Benham, route performance manager, said: 'As part of our ongoing study into possible future improvement options for the A3 Ham Barn roundabout, we have recently met with Hampshire County Council and East Hampshire District Council to discuss our findings to date.

'There was broad agreement that the "do nothing" option is acceptable, albeit in the short to medium term, given that the roundabout does not generally suffer significant congestion.

'It is important to stress that we have no immediate concerns about the performance of this roundabout.'
