Southsea Common was packed with people soaking up the sun, including Sharon Bedwell, of Sheridan Gardens, Whiteley.

She had taken her daughter Amy, 12, and her friend Letitia McMullan, 12, out for a picnic.

Sharon said: ‘It has been lovely – the good weather means the children can get out and have some fun. They’ve been on some rides and we enjoyed having a picnic.’

And Hazel Polkinghorne, 27, of Cornwell Close, Rowner, spent the day with family in Leesland Park.

She said: ‘After all the cold weather it’s great to finally have hot weather.’

The Met Office has forecast good weather in the run-up to Easter.

Forecaster Sarah Holland said: ‘The weather will stay nice into the bank holiday weekend.’

She added: ‘On Saturday there is a chance there will be thundery showers, but the temperature could go up as high as 24C.

‘Easter Sunday is also looking like it will be warm. Temperatures in April have been quite high on average.’

The hot weather has also had a positive effect on gardens.

The News gardening writer Brian Kidd said: ‘With this boisterous weather things are growing like mad.

‘People will have noticed their grass and flowers growing rather fast all of a sudden.’
