A NUCLEAR emergency siren at Portsmouth Naval Base will be tested tomorrow morning.

The navy has given members of the public advance notice of the routine test to avoid any alarm in Portsmouth or Gosport.

The siren’s sound is a wavering tone and will last for one minute when it sounds at 9.30am on Thursday.

By agreement with various local authorities, the siren is tested three times a year – on the last working days in February, June and October.

This is part of Portsmouth Naval Base’s nuclear accident response plan and is also in line with Portsmouth and Gosport councils’ nuclear safety plan.
