THE number of people claiming the Jobseekers Allowance unemployment benefit has fallen.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics today showed the number of men and women across the region claiming the benefit fell from 12,393 in April to 11,743 in May.

In Portsmouth, the figure dropped from 5,102 to 4,871 between the two months – a difference of 231.

Havant’s fell by 159, from 2,403 to 2,244, and in Gosport the figure fell by 68, from 1,451 to 1,383.

Fareham’s claimant count fell by 64, from 1,165 to 1,101, and in East Hampshire the figure fell by 49, from 979 to 930.

Seventy-nine fewer people claimed benefit in Chichester. The figure fell from 1,293 to 1,214.
