A sparkly poppy misses the point of Remembrance Day

Lots of people harp on about the fact that Remembrance Day isn’t given due respect these days but that’s utter nonsense.

Yes, some idiots have caused damage to a few memorials and that’s despicable but thankfully far from widespread. Some work places don’t want staff to wear poppies and that’s petty but not commonplace.

I’m always touched to see young and old wearing their poppies with pride. What I’m not so keen on is the emergence of the jewel-encrusted poppies that some TV types have started wearing.

A paper poppy is a simple symbol of respect. Sparkly poppies are a vulgar display of wealth.

Those who buy them should put more money in the British Legion tin and pin on their paper poppy with pride.
