I admit there was a tear in my eye on Thursday evening as we saluted our finest local sportsmen and women at The News Sports Awards at Fratton Park.

Amongst all of the achievers, one name really stood out for me – Ted Harris.

You probably don’t know him, but for 36 years Ted has committed his life to teaching youngsters to box.

Not in swanky gyms with air conditioning and water machines, but in subways and in the fields around Cosham.

Some went on to gain national honours, but all of them learned respect for themselves and the community around them.

Now in his 70s, Ted is hanging up his gloves to spend more time with his family. What a gentleman.
