Have your say

Many young people are asked about what they wish to do as a career.

They are also given the opportunity to think about aspirations in other areas of life.

Frequently we come across pessimistic and negative attitudes which can dampen our aspirations

Some would be happy and content working in an ordinary nine-to-five job, while others are a little more adventurous and want to do something more challenging.

Regardless of where individuals end up, to get in a particular position some work is required.

There are two different types of young people I’ve come across. Those who have a plan and are happy to get into what’s seen as an average job and those who are dreaming big and aiming to get somewhere very few may reach.

When I was younger, a number of my friends wanted to be a professional footballer.

I would instantly dismiss their dreams, claiming they were too unrealistic.

In fact, I was wrong as a couple of those friends are now playing professionally.

So frequently we come across pessimistic and negative attitudes which can dampen our aspirations.

I think it’s important we understand not to allow this to happen. In fact, there should be more of us with dreams for the future.

There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big, whatever you want to do, but it’s important to acknowledge the hard work that will be required to achieve your goal.

If you have a dream and don’t strive to make that happen, then why would it happen?

It’s all very well having enthusiasm towards something, but put in what you hope to get back.

Secondly, remain committed. Keep your thoughts fixed on an ultimate goal, otherwise you may drift and not get to where you’d like to be.

Commitment should be evident in every area of your work.

If there is any lack of commitment, then the dream you may have could become progressively unrealistic.

Working towards an ultimate goal will present its challenges. Learn to plough through them stronger than before.

With whatever you do and whoever you meet, ensure you present yourself confidently. Never be over-confident, although do be someone who is certain on their progressive signposts.

Opportunities to meet people who may influence where you end up may arise and if you express a lack of confidence, then positive impressions may drift with people paying less attention to what you do.
