RICK JACKSON: The patriotism inspired by HMS Queen Elizabeth is wonderful

The greatest sport of all turns 150 years old this year.

It was back in 1863 that England played Scotland and the first rules of football were laid down.

England played with one defender, two midfielders and seven attackers!

But how did this game, where you kick some inflated pig skin around, become the world’s favourite? What makes kicking a ball more satisfying that throwing it?

Maybe, unlike rugby or cricket, it’s something you can play on your own. Kicking a ball against the wall is just as much fun as a match!

In the 1920s came the offside rule. I wonder what the next big football change will be?
