In a scene from Downton Abbey last Sunday, hero Capt Crawley turned to his valet/footman as they strode through the trenches in the Somme and announced: ‘You’ve been taking logic pills again.’
It sounded more like Blackadder talking to Baldrick and was yet another jarring anachronism in a series which has lost its way.
Earlier, a footman had referred to somebody ‘getting shafted’ – a phrase which was not in use when I was a kid, let alone at the beginning of the 20th century.
I’m not one of those pedants who scour costume dramas for silly little errors – but there’s no avoiding clangers like these.
It confirmed my suspicion that this series has been written and produced in a rush.
