I reckon Harry Redknapp’s greatest skill has always been an ability to look after number one – and if that means twisting an opinion to suit the prevailing circumstances, then so be it.
Putting his excuses in place before he fails to save QPR from relegation, he said recently: ‘You shouldn’t be paying massive wages when you’ve got a stadium that holds 18,000.’
But hold on a minute. It was okay to do exactly this during his time at Pompey, apparently.
In those days some players were understood to be pocketing four times as much in a week as many supporters earned in a year.
When QPR tumble out of the Premier League in a few months’ time, we will await Redknapp’s excuses with interest.
