England should have played Le Tissier much more often

CHERYL GIBBS: Not a great film, but I still balled my eyes out

Have your say

I’m interviewing ex-football star Matt Le Tissier next week. He’s appearing with the rest of the Soccer Saturday team from Sky at the Bournemouth International Centre later this month, so is popping in to the radio station for a chat.

I’ve been a Pompey supporter all my life, but I’m also a fan of the former Saint. He and Gazza were the two most exciting footballers of their generation. But why was Le Tissier not picked more for England and a team moulded around his talents?

England managers have always liked combative midfielders over flair players. If Messi or Zidane had been born in England, I wonder who would get the number eight shirt – them or Gareth Barry?
