The Goodwood Festival of Speed was amazing. A combination of the tremendous noise of Formula One cars and the sheer escapism of looking around supercars you could not afford (unless you won the lottery) – and then sitting in much more humble ones that you could! The perfect day for the petrolhead.

But for me, the weekend was stolen by the Vulcan bomber. What an incredible aeroplane.

She drew gasps of appreciation from the big crowds,, then the noise from her four Rolls-Royce Olympus engines silenced the place.

It’s imperative this great piece of history continues to fly – and so should Concorde and the giant SRN4 hovercraft at Lee-on-the-Solent.
