If revenge really is a dish best served cold, then Fiona Phillips must have prepared hers years ago and kept it stored away in the deep freeze.

Forty years ago, the former GMTV presenter was a pupil at Millbrook Community School in Southampton.

When she returned as guest speaker to mark its transformation into an academy, she left no-one in any doubt about how much she loathed her secondary education.

She spoke of a school which crushed aspiration, offered no encouragement, was ‘rampant with hormones’ and turned her from a grade A student into a ‘vile teenager.’

She named her old headmaster (now in his 80s) as a man who commanded no respect whatsoever. Better out than in, I suppose.
