All hail the public relations people at Network Rail who have persuaded their top brass to donate their bonuses to a ‘fund’.
It’s a good move. Against a background of government arguing about whether the bonuses could be vetoed and howls of outrage from the tax-paying public, Network Rail has made the decision to gift the money to helping to improve safety at level crossings.
It’s an important issue, has a railway theme and comes at exactly the right moment to appease a growing thirst for bonus blood.
Now I love a good public backlash as much as the next person. But I also appreciate a smooth PR operation.
So well done Network Rail. A nice way to avoid fat cat criticism and put the cash to a much better use.
