It’s sad to see Jeremy Paxman leave the BBC’s Newsnight programme after 25 years.

He was always one of the giants of journalism for me – him and Kate Adie inspired me to follow their lead and become a reporter.

For me, newspapers were always going to be what I loved and I’m lucky in that I managed to be a newspaper reporter for a decade, covering all manner of things (but never anything about a cat stuck up a tree).

For Paxman to keep on at Michael Howard, the then home secretary, when he wouldn’t give a straight answer was jaw-dropping stuff.

It was great to see Mr Howard back on Newsnight for Paxo’s last show. It tied everything off nicely.

Paxo will be missed though.
