A little while ago I wrote a column wishing this year could be as exciting in terms of sport as last year’s was.
I bemoaned the fact there would be no Olympics, no buzz upon the streets of London, no cheering whilst sitting in traffic queues in the Portsmouth rush hour.
So I’m chuffed for Alex Thomson, who broke the British record for solo circumnavigating the globe and who crossed the finish line shouting the word ‘Gosport!’ – because that’s where he’s from.
He came third in the Vendee Globe race overall, and battled weather, mechanical failures, fatigue and three months spent on his own in order to arrive home in 80 and a bit days.
Can he have a mailbox painted gold, too please?
