I admit that I’m not a philatelist by any stretch of the imagination.
But every now and then I do go out and buy myself a set of stamps.
I love the ones which will be with us this July, those commemorating the start of the First World War and in particular the photograph of Private William Cecil ‘Billie’ Tickle.
He was just 15 when he went to war, exactly the same age as my son will be this summer.
In the picture, Tickle has a cheeky grin.
He obviously has no idea of the horror that awaits him, or that he will die aged 17 in the Somme – just one of so many British soldiers killed in action.
Other stamps include a poppy and a poem – beautiful images of an ugly war.
