Elite sportsmen and women are basking in the spotlight right now. So it is refreshing to see the Mountbatten Centre mount an exhibition to honour everyday athletes.

Everyday Olympians is a series of portraits in the pool’s café by local photographer, Mark Parham. The subjects are pre-schooler to septuagenarian swimmers, snapped in front of the water. Not all are able-bodied or in optimum condition, but their swimming hats, goggles and disciplined faces show they mean business.

There is something touching about their willingness to be immortalised full-figure in a dripping wet swimming costume. His pictures are an antidote to the air-brushed figures on gym posters and a reminder that everyone can keep themselves in shape.
