Labour leader Ed Miliband came in for a lot of stick when the books he took away on holiday were spotted by an eagle-eyed press photographer.

Admittedly, going on holiday with someone who chooses to take Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive Through the Dangers of Leading doesn’t sound like a barrel of laughs.

But before we give Ed too much of a hard time, it’s worth remembering our own reading habits on holiday.

Having carefully selected three novels to take with me on our recent summer break, I promptly ditched them all for the Danielle Steel book and the dog-eared copy of Hello I found lying around in the flat.

Let’s hope, for Mrs Miliband’s sake, that he did the same.
