Some national newspapers are partial to articles with headlines like ‘100 books you must read’ – and it annoys the hell out of me.
My immediate response is always why? And who says?
Presuming to tell other people what they will enjoy or (even worse) what is good for them is about as arrogant as it gets.
That’s why I’m delighted to report that of the 100 ‘must-read’ books listed in the Daily Telegraph recently, I’ve completed just two.
These are The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Catch-22.
I’ve seen 33 others in celluloid form, but the only one I would sit down and watch again is To Kill a Mocking Bird.
Fortunately, I find my lack of literary credibility strangely reassuring.
