A recent article confirmed Arthur Lowe, the actor, was every bit as tetchy and pompous as his most famous creation, Captain Mainwaring.
I know this to be true because many years ago, as I drove into a virtually deserted car park, I spotted his unmistakable outline in the distance.
There was something I wanted to say, but I could sense him bristling with every approaching footstep.
‘Mr Lowe,’ I said, ‘I would just like to shake your hand and thank you for all the pleasure you have given me over the years.’
The deed was done, he grudgingly muttered his thanks and the encounter was over.
He died a few months later, so I’ll always be glad I took the trouble.
