If anybody embodies the vacuous nature of celebrity these days, it is Jedward. The intensely irritating Irish twins John and Edward Grimes prove beyond doubt that a complete lack of obvious talent is no longer a barrier to success.

Somehow the pair and their ridiculous hair (sculpted into something resembling an ice cream cone) became famous after appearing on the X Factor in 2009 and finishing sixth, despite showing the nation they couldn’t sing or dance.

Two years on, they’ve made millions, appearing in their own reality show, advertising products and recording an album. They also have a chat show, a European tour - and have even met Barack Obama.

All those true entertainers from the past must be turning slowly in their graves.
