I suggested a few weeks ago the next government would probably be a Lib-Lab coalition.
Now we hear the two parties are already in talks, with Vince Cable said to be orchestrating the preliminary discussions.
This confirms the Lib Dems’ reputation as the harlots of British politics – ready to jump into bed with anyone if the terms are acceptable.
It also means, of course, that the Labour Party won’t be able to contemplate ridding itself of Ed Miliband as leader for the time being, because even in Westminster it is inadvisable to plot against the plotters.
This did not please a left-leaning friend, who told me: ‘Ed Miliband as prime minister? I’d rather have the Glenn Miliband in charge.’
