On Bonfire Night I decided to treat my kids to a small firework display in the back garden.

I spent about £30 on a firework variety pack and then found somewhere safe and dry to store them.

The only problem is I grew up in the ’70s and can still vividly remember the government safety commercials they used to show on telly as November 5 approached.

They were really frightening and featured people returning to fireworks that hadn’t gone off properly, followed by lots of screaming.

There were other equally terrifying commercials (kids playing on train tracks was one) and I seem to come out in a nervous sweat when I remember them.

So much so that next year I think we’ll stick to a trip to an organised firework display.
