This week I realised how important it is to always haggle over the price you pay for things.

Last year I paid £168 for an insurance policy to cover my central heating system and boiler.

Luckily my boiler has been fine and I haven’t used the policy. So when I came to renew I was surprised to see my renewal price listed as £182.

I said I wasn’t happy about the increase and I was put through to the customer complaints department.

I explained I’d never used the policy and thought the increase was not justified.

The customer services person put me on hold for a couple of minutes, then came back telling me they could now offer the policy for £164!

The moral? Don’t settle for the first price.
