America has always had a culture of bigger and better from cars to homes, food – and even prison sentences.
Now I’m not against a lengthy prison term if someone deserves it. In fact I’m all for capital punishment if it fits the crime.
But what I can’t understand are the terms handed out in America.
Recently 62-year-old Texan tycoon Allen Stanford was sentenced to 110 years for a £4.6bn investment con.
Why not just say you’re going to prison and never coming out? Were they expecting him to casually stroll out of the prison gates when he’s 172?
Apparently he got off lightly, as prosecutors were pushing for 230 years!
Who is this man? Some kind of immortal?
