After seeing The Vamps at Gunwharf Quays last Friday, with mums and dads and their kids in the crowd, it brought home to me how this country really needs another Top of the Pops.

Yes. we have dedicated music television, but none of it is mainstream.

BBC1 or ITV, as the two channels with broad appeal, need to put on a half-hour show where parents and kids can sit down together and see the latest acts.

The Sunday night X Factor is heading that way with up to three guest acts. Maybe a pop programme is the next big earner for Simon Cowell?

I feel sorry for kids of today, who don’t get to hear their dads comment on how the male lead singer looks like a girl!
