When it comes to Christmas presents, this year a lot of mine will be practical things rather than luxury items.

Having moved in with my boyfriend a few months ago, we’ve asked family members for a lot of kitchen bits and pieces. I’ve even requested an electric toothbrush from my mum – thrilling.

A lot of people hate receiving practical presents, as they think a present should be a treat, not something useful.

But I’ve never minded as it saves me spending my own money on something dull.

But I am starting to regret only asking for useful things, particularly because I know pretty much exactly what will be in every parcel.

Perhaps I should see it as a great excuse to hit the sales with the cash I’ve saved on not buying saucepans!
