CLIVE SMITH: It’s time to get our priorities right and put our country first

Have your say

Keith Newbery had been writing this column since year blot. In fact as a young journalist Keith documented the untimely Mary Rose episode of 1545.

He went on to become a hugely respected and inspiring columnist and for that I personally would like to say thank you.

It’s a tough old job writing a weekly column, walking the line between being pithy, acerbic, caring – delivering comment in a way that stimulates, aggravates and titillates.

To write a column of significance week in week out takes some doing.

But to do it for more than four decades demands the performance of a true wordsmith.

Cheers Keith, I raise my poisoned chalice to you and celebrate your retirement.
