Keep children safe – but beware the nanny state

As the kids broke up for their summer holidays, my mind went back to summer 1986 and the time when I left my favourite school, Swanmore Middle School in Ryde.

At 13 the old school system on the island saw me leave middle School for high school.

Teacher Mr Vincent threw a goodbye disco and I had my first ever snog! Happy days.

But sadly, the disco was ruined by Philip Reed who fell into the turntables after he was tripped up by Leon West whilst dancing to Agadoo.

I went home on the no 3 bus, nothing like those kids in London I read about this week who hired flashy Ferraris and Porsches for their proms.
