David Cameron’s decision to recommend ousted cabinet colleagues for knighthoods proves why our current honours system is so deeply flawed it’s no longer worth bothering with.
No non-MP could accept there’s any justification at all in ever giving a politician a trumped-up accolade, let alone when the person in question has been found wanting in their current role. If they can’t hold on to a cabinet position why should they get a pat for services rendered?
Normal folk who get pushed out of their jobs don’t suddenly find themselves clutching an invite to Buckingham Palace.
