The fact that the velodrome is the first of the London Olympic facilities to be handed over on time, on budget and virtually unheralded is symptomatic of the sport it will showcase.

Track cycling – by dint of thorough preparation – is the one discipline at which we are expected to win a substantial haul of medals.

It is attracting new fans all the time because it is a refreshingly clean and exciting sport, full of committed, fit and unassuming stars who are a credit to themselves and their country.

Other sports – especially Premiership football – would do well to watch and learn.
