CLIVE SMITH: It’s time to get our priorities right and put our country first

Have your say

In recent years, track cycling has become an ever more popular sport in this country – and with good reason.

Firstly, we’re good at it – which obviously helps – but there’s more to it than that.

At a time when so many other sports are tainted by obscene amounts of money, drugs and obnoxious ‘superstars,’ cycling continues to throw up a succession of clean-living, personable young champions.

I suppose Chris Hoy started it all, but it is the women who are taking it to greater heights.

First came the serene and combative Victoria Pendleton, to be followed by the perky and indefatigable Laura Trott. Now we have the smiling Becky James.

It makes you proud to be British.
