The imminent increase in postal charges is certainly a financial scandal, but the threat it presents to our cultural wellbeing is equally serious.
It means even more people will be putting their trust in electronic communications – and this in turns means that the execrable and slovenly textspeak will gain further popularity.
I am all for the English language continuing to evolve and embrace influences from other lands (where would we be without words like schadenfreude for example?) but there are limits.
Anyone foolish enough to send me texts including phrases like ‘can u do me a gr8 favour’ can expect to have them translated into English and returned. I’m no grammatical snob – but you have to have standards.
