Scandalous. That’s the only word to describe the on-off saga concerning the campaign for a Second World War Arctic convoys medal.

When I was running the British Army magazine Soldier, we ran a campaign for a decoration for the Suez Canal Zone 1951-1954 veterans. One day over lunch, a very high-ranking army officer quietly suggested that I drop the magazine’s support because the campaign would never succeed. I pretended not to hear him and our stories continued.

A while later it was announced that the Naval General Service Medal 1915-62 and the General Service Medal 1918-62 with ‘Canal Zone’ clasp was to be awarded to the veterans.

So to the Arctic convoy veterans, I say don’t give up!
