It’s the return of the summer reading scheme at the Discovery Centre in Gosport and other libraries, where children have to read six books over the summer holiday in order to gain some scratch-and-sniff stickers, a certificate and a medal.

The theme this year is circus – not sure how eager I am to take in a deep breath of one of those stickers then.

It’s not just about taking books out. That would be too easy. The children also have to tell a librarian about the books which they have read in order to earn their reward.

It’s a lovely idea and one that my children have embraced year-on-year, with varying degrees of success.

Libraries are such a fabulous resource, I’d encourage any parents to take full advantage while we still have them.
