As a fully paid-up member of the fairy family, a brochure entitled An Earthly Fairyland would get my attention.
Jackie Baynes, a member of the Portsmouth Society and the Hampshire Garden Trust, kindly sent me a copy of her new brochure.
It’s a magical meander down memory lane with the story of Southsea Rock Gardens and the Rock Garden Pavilion.
Construction of the Rock Gardens began in 1928 and in Jackie’s brochure there are pages of information and photos.
In the early 1950s my Scots gran would take me to the Rock Gardens to see the fountain and waterfall, models of birds and small animals and the aviaries.
It was a fairyland to me back then.
The brochure is packed with memories. Available in bookshops/City Museum (£4.95), or phone (023) 9283 1461.
