Apart from Hurricane Sandy and the devastation it caused in America, the news that struck me most this week was something more local.

The night before the D-Day Museum in Southsea was due to unveil its new entrance in the presence of veterans, two men smashed their way in and stole the Poppy Appeal charity box.

What a disgusting act, which took place in the same week as a Royal Marine from Havant killed in Afghanistan was repatriated.

Have these thieves got absolutely no conscience or sense of shame? Obviously not.

Forces personnel fought bravely in the Second World War to protect our freedom.

But when such low crimes are carried out, they must wonder whether it was worth it.
