When walking the dog at the beach, there are many things that one expects to see – but a man emerging from a prickly bush grasping a clump of asparagus isn’t one.
But that is exactly what I saw, so I stopped to ask him and his wife what they were up to.
It turns out that asparagus can be harvested along our shoreline and not just bought in neat little black plastic packages from the supermarket.
Yep, seems it’s growing wild in Gosport and with a little know-how and a beady eye, you too can have some to take home and cook to accompany your dinner.
Now that’s what I call foraging in style – far more upmarket than blackberry-picking (though admittedly they are yummy).
