Once upon a time, giving to charity consisted of tossing a few coins in a bucket ,sponsoring a pal a few quid to do something crazy or putting your loose change in one of those little envelopes that gets popped through your letterbox from time to time.

Sadly, those days have long gone. Nowadays charities seem to want your whole life savings and they will go to extremes to find ways of parting you from your cash.

Don’t they realise that being pestered relentlessly in the street is extremely off-putting?

I’m talking about the ‘chuggers’. If you haven’t heard of this term, it stands for charity muggers.

These are the guys and gals who lurk in shopping centres or stand out on the pavement, just waiting to pounce on unsuspecting shoppers minding their own business.

Not a week goes when I’m not hassled by these annoying people, Don’t get me wrong, I, like most people, contribute to charities every so often.

I don’t just donate cash, but also support them by taking my unwanted items to charity shops.

But instead of throwing your spare change into a box, most charities now want us to sign up to a direct debit every month.

I realise these guys are just trying to earn a living trying to persuade us to help these worthy causes.

But they’re going the wrong way about it.

Don’t they realise that being pestered relentlessly in the street is extremely off-putting?

Yes, they might get a few sign-ups. But the majority of folk will no doubt be put off by this in-your-face approach. I know I am.

There are other, more effective, ways of getting involved with your favourite charity directly – like helping the cause by donating your time and skill.

By volunteering you have the opportunity to build social circles while reaping the physical, mental and spiritual benefits.

Secondly, helping others improves your self-worth in so many ways. When you’ve given something to a charity that you truly believe in, you feel good about it.

So much more effective and worthwhile than giving to those shark-like chuggers!
