We need to stop and consider how to safeguard pensioners

Have your say

The charity Stonewall has reported evidence of vulnerable pensioners being bullied about their sexuality.

One factor may be the predominance of Africans and Eastern Europeans in care work, many of whom follow religions that oppose homosexuality.

News presenters have stumbled between gaffes about race and sexuality whilst attempting to cover the story sensitively.

But the nub of the issue is this: elderly gay people are more likely to have suffered breakdown in their relationships with family than their straight peers.

As our family networks continue to evolve, we need to consider how future pensioners will be safeguarded if there are no spouses or children to fight their corner.
