Today has literally seen the dawn of a new era for The News.
For you can now pick up a copy of your favourite newspaper much earlier in the day – with many outlets having us on the news stands at first light this morning.
The decision to get editions out on the streets at an earlier time has been under consideration for some time and has been influenced by a number of factors.
Whenever we have spoken to readers about what they want from their local paper then a call for us to be available earlier has always been among the list of subjects raised. We need to ensure we are available when you want to buy us.
We have also looked at the way people consume news. Long gone are the days when people had to wait for their evening papers or possibly catch the teatime or evening news bulletins to find out what was happening in the world.
News is now a 24-hour rolling commodity which can be accessed anywhere at any time. We need to ensure we are ahead of the competition when it comes to breaking the news of the day.
We have also considered people's changing lifestyles on where, when and why they shop.
As mentioned above, it is important that we are in the shops at the same time as you are.
Bringing print times forward always raises the issue over earlier deadlines. But, as with any newspaper, whatever time the last page has been sent to the press there is always the possibility of a story breaking five minutes later.
We will continue to cover breaking news on our portsmouth.co.uk website while ensuring that any story which happens after deadline has the comprehensive coverage you would expect in the next day's edition.
And this is something that will not change – our commitment to provide you with the perfect newspaper package every day.
We pride ourselves on our unrivalled coverage of news and sport, backed by the best and brightest pictures and all the local information you need in your lives – and this will continue from the first thing in the morning to the last thing at night.
