Maybe I’m missing something. The Chancellor tells me Britain’s broke. We are seeing job losses, local councils having the guts ripped out of them and care homes closing.

Hospital wards are shutting too, there are reductions in public transport and a two-year pay freeze.

And all because, I am told, we have to reduce the national debut, tighten our belts and accept the inevitable.

So how come we can summon up warplanes, fly them thousands of miles and fire hundreds of Tomahawk missiles at £500,000 a throw?

I really find that hard to understand.

What I do understand is that war is the last refuge of the scoundrel when it comes to diverting attention from cuts and a struggling economy.
