Oh, how times have changed. My son’s birthday party – he has just turned 12 – was a transitional one.

He had a select disco at home which saw 20 or so kids giving it their thumping all to such music as Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire and then running off to play hide and seek (which, in all fairness is awesome in our house as it’s Edwardian cupboards galore).

Then it was back to the kitchen for some birthday cake with candles, before a session of Spin the Bottle.

But there’s the rub, because the bottle is a mobile phone app which requires finger-spinning on the screen.

What on earth happened to using an empty beer bottle? Oh yes, that’s right, the guests were 12, even though nearly everything else was definitely 16.
