Of course we should all do the right thing and take reusable carrier bags to the supermarket.
Single-use plastic bags are bad for the environment and reducing waste should concern us all.
But it does irk me when some shops charge as much as 5p for a carrier while others try and force one on me when it’s clear I can transport a single loaf of bread home without.
When I do my weekly shop, I always take my own bags. But if I pop in for a few items on my way home, I might not be as prepared. Considering the amount I spend in the supermarket, I don’t think a free bag is an unreasonable demand and I’m not going to feel guilty about taking one.
A compulsory charge would just be a preachy way to suck more money out of us.
