As someone who has fond memories of living in Liverpool, I’m pleased to see that previously hidden documents relating to the Hillsborough disaster will finally be released this week.
On April 15, 1989, 95 Liverpool fans lost their lives on the terraces of Sheffield Wednesday’s stadium. The death toll rose to 96 four years later when a further victim passed away.
It’s shameful that it’s taken this long for the families to get what they’ve wanted and that they’ve had to fight their way through a shroud of secrecy.
Government and police documents should have been made public years ago.
Nothing can reverse these people’s pain, but adding to their grief reflects badly on all those who tried to prevent the release of the documents.
