It’s refreshing to find an honourable Lib Dem like Councillor John Ireland giving up his post as cabinet member for children’s services on Portsmouth City Council.
He had the guts to say what many of his colleagues must think, explaining: ‘I didn’t come into politics to be cutting services for children. These cuts go against my principles.’
His action came after council bosses in the city decided to approve almost £2m of cuts in services for the under-fives.
Council leader Gerald Vernon-Jackson comments: ‘We have to make sure that in Portsmouth we protect services for the most vulnerable people.’
But I would ask him this – which group is more vulnerable than young children?
