RICK JACKSON: The patriotism inspired by HMS Queen Elizabeth is wonderful

It's quite normal to spot a pantomime cow or a couple of dames on stage at this time of year.

But the audience at The Kings Theatre were shouting: 'He's behind you' when a surprise visitor popped up for a sing and dance.

Our dog Chipper joined the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk for a one-off performance at the Southsea theatre.

More than 100 Chipper Club members were in the audience for the special show and cheered when they caught a glimpse of their familiar friend.

The loveable News mascot joined stars Aiden J Harvey - who plays Simple Simon - and Home and Away actress, Lynne McGranger, just before the show finale.

And seven-year-old club member Heather Bryant was picked to join Chipper on stage for a magical sing-a-long.

'The children did a bit of singing and they loved it,' said Sandra Smith, promotions manager for the Kings.

'We knew where the Chipper Club members were sitting and the usherette picked two to go backstage after the interval.

'They came on at the sing-song, just before the show finale.

'I know things like this really mean a lot to them. It was really something to remember.'

We teamed up with the Kings to give Chipper Club members a festive treat.

Each Chipster got in free to see the show when they were accompanied by a paying adult.

The Chipper Club is free to join and is for children aged 11 and under.
